New Journal!

by Prof. Claus Vögele, PhD

The European Journal for Health Psychology

After 23 years as one of the most important publication outlets for health psychology in the German-speaking countries, the “Zeitschrift für Gesundheitspsychologie” is now available completely in English under the title the “European Journal of Health Psychology.” The “Zeitschrift für Gesundheitspsychologie” was established in 1993 to provide a publication platform for the rapidly growing health psychology literature from the German-speaking countries. Although the journal was not affiliated officially with the Division of Health Psychology (Fachgruppe Gesundheitspsychologie) within the German Psychological Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie), it contributed significantly to the establishment of the discipline of health psychology in Germany.

Authors had been able to publish their articles in English in the journal for several years, so that a journal issue could contain a mixture of German and English articles. It was therefore a natural progression for the former editors, in discussion with the German Division of Health Psychology and other health psychology colleagues, to decide to change the journal to one publication language: English. The editors are confident that this transformation will contribute to the visibility and reception of the research published in the journal.

In order to prepare the readers for this change, the journal adopted the subtitle “European Journal of Health Psychology” in 2016, and from 2018 this will be the journal’s main title. The choice of the journal’s title was preceded by intensive discussions within the editorial team, a scoping review by the publisher, and – due to its closeness in name –consultation with the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS). The EHPS Executive Committee unanimously agreed with this choice of journal title, and suggested a closer affiliation of the journal with the EHPS in the future.

It’s all in the name – as it is for the “European Journal of Health Psychology.” As was the case for its predecessor, the new English journal is dedicated to the publication of empirical or experimental research in health psychology, including applications, methodological developments, and comprehensive and critical literature reviews on the theory and application of psychological approaches to health and disease. The journal welcomes contributions from around the world, but acknowledges its origin in and relatedness to European health psychology. Editors and publisher are convinced that the internationalization of the journal, which will also be reflected in an extended editorial board, will continue to contribute to the success of health psychology research and its implementation in health care.

The editors look forward to numerous contributions to the European Journal of Health Psychology and invite researchers and/or their working groups to submit papers on all aspects of the field! All manuscripts, including Electronic Supplementary Material (ESM), should be submitted online at http://www.editorialmanager.com/zgp, where full instructions to authors are also available.
